Warriors rout South Carolina State, 100-73
Hauns Brereton scored a career-high 22 points, including an improbable slam dunk to ignite a 29-3 second-half rally, as Hawai’i streaked past South Carolina State, 100-73, in nonconference action Thursday night.
Joston Thomas added 16 points and 10 rebounds and Zane Johnson contributed 14 points as the Warriors improved to 8-5 entering Saturday’s 3 p.m. showdown vs. No. 19-ranked UNLV.
Shaquille Stokes added 10 points and five assists, and Miah Ostrowski had seven points and six assists for the Warriors, who have now won six of their last seven games.
South Carolina State led 42-41 at halftime and the game was tied, 48-48, three minutes into the second half when Brereton broke to the basket and slammed home a thunderous dunk as the Stan Sheriff Center crowd of 6,276 erupted. Brereton then drained a 3-pointer 34 seconds later and point guard Ostrowski added seven straight points as UH eventually built the lead to 77-51 with 9:35 remaining.
It was the first time a Hawaii team reached 100 points since 2002.
SCSU fell to 4-9.
More details, including video highlights and interviews, will be posted later.
what a game tonight. we looked so awful in the first half and then we started playing defense in the 2nd. The free throws are definitely a problem, but Hauns has arrived as the 2nd option after zane.
Nice to see the arena filled with more fans tonight too. Saturday afternoon the place will be rocking!
just gotta work those free throws
That 1st half was horrible to watch. I loved the intensity and defense in the 2nd. The missed free throws are starting to kill me. There is no excuse for that. I’m not sure how much time the coach has them practicing free-throws but it looks like they need need to do more. Those missed free throws, along with the turn-overs will cost us a lot of close games later on.
Welcome to The Show, Hauns !
