Johnson named WAC Player of the Week

A day after Christmas, the Hawaii basketball team got yet another gift when senior Zane Johnson was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week.

The Warriors went 2-1 in the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic, and Johnson was one of five players named to the all-tournament team. Johnson averaged 19.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game in the three games.

He scored 18 in Hawaii’s upset of No. 14-ranked Xavier, then scored 27 in an historic victory over Clemson for fifth place. It was the first time in program history that Hawaii defeated a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The 6-foot-6 shooting guard made 12 3-pointers during the tournament. He also extended his streak of consecutive made free throws to 29, which set a UH program record. The streak was snapped later in the tournament, but he still went 9 of 10 from the free throw line in the three games.

This is the second consecutive week that a Hawaii player has won the award. Junior center Vander Joaquim was named WAC Player of the Week last week.

It is the second time in his career that Johnson won the award. He also won it once last season.

The Warriors will return to game action on Thursday, December 29, when they host South Carolina State at 8 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
