Fotu signs with Hawaii

The Hawaii basketball team wasn’t just playing a game in international territory last week. It was also busy securing an international player for the future.

Isaac Fotu, a 6-foot-8 forward from New Zealand, has signed a national letter of intent to play at Hawaii starting in the 2012-13 season. He will be a freshman next season and will have four seasons of eligibility.

Fotu is considered one of the top prep players in New Zealand, and he was the youngest player (17) ever to make the roster of the New Zealand national team last summer. He contributed off the bench when New Zealand won the Stankovic Cup in China in August. Hawaii center Vander Joaquim played for Angola in that same tournament.

Fotu made a recruiting visit to Hawaii earlier this month, and later visited Saint Louis. He was also reportedly being recruited by Utah, Oregon and UNLV.

An official announcement from UH is expected on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Here are some YouTube highlight videos of Fotu (he’s wearing No. 7):

  3. Didn’t think they’d get Fotu, too. That’s a nice three-man recruiting class. Thanks for the scoop, Dayton.

  7. Brandon Jawato has a scholarship at the moment…if I were the coach that would be a temperary one till Blakes clears admission. Or Thomas needs to give up his scholarship or be let go…just thinking out loud.

  9. I am excited about this kid. He’s got tons of potential.

  10. RE: NLOI

International Players were never ‘really’ bound by those rules …
They can basically sign a scholarship agreement any time of year …

Historically, American University coaches focused on ‘the rush’ for American High School & JC/Transfer Players during the recruiting windows, and often/sometimes sign the internationals later …

In this case, it looks like (i think) Gib has gotten some really good skilled and mentally & physically superb and mature players that would be very high recruits if they were playing in more visible American High Schools … Orel and Isaac are the kinds of players that give our guys ‘fits’ in international ball …

Welcome Aboard, Isaac Orel & Caleb — Nice Recruiting Class !

Awesome work, Coaching Staff & Players ! (They often make the difference!)

For the Fans, i hope there’s still a few “High Flyers” to come …
