Who will be the new King?

Senior guard Zane Johnson missed several workouts with the Hawaii basketball team last month while recovering from an ankle injury.

He is ready to go now, and the preseason title he wants most is “King of the Beach.”

The Warriors will hold their second annual “King of the Beach” competition this Saturday at Waikiki Beach. It is a fun – yet furious – competition between teammates in various beach-related drills.

“I think our top five right now would be Hauns (Brereton), Pi’i (Minns), Trevor (Wiseman), Christian (Standhardinger) … and myself,” Johnson said. “I’m the dark horse.”

Johnson actually placed third in the competition last year. Graduated senior Bill Amis won it last year, so there will be a new “King” this year.

Johnson has been hampered with the ankle injury since before the team’s trip to Asia in August, but he has started to participate in team workouts and open gym scrimmages recently.

“The ankle’s ready to go – no excuses,” he said. “I’m going to get this trophy.”

The winner of the competition gets to place the koa bowl trophy atop his locker for the entire season.

  1. i’d think garrett would be a contender since they say he’s the most athletic on the team

  2. what happened to the beard staying until after the season??

  3. I think I’d put my money on Pi’i Minns winning this. Gotta be one local bruddah that gotta win King of The Beach c’mon now…
