Introducing Garrett Jefferson

When this summer started, Garrett Jefferson’s plan was to improve for his sophomore season at Citrus College.

By end of summer, Jefferson was on a NCAA Division I roster with the Hawaii basketball team.

Jefferson, a 6-foot-3 guard, was discovered at a summer tournament for junior college players, and opted to join the Warriors as a sophomore rather than return to Citrus. He completed his junior college courses by the end of summer, so he will be eligible for the 2011-12 season.

“Mainly the style of play,” Jefferson said of his decision to join the Warriors. “They set a lot of on-ball screens and they get to the basket a lot. And coach said they’re going to try and run, and that’s what I do best.”

Jefferson was a standout at the Southern California Community College Showcase in late July, and immediately started drawing interest from Hawaii and other California programs.

Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold has described Jefferson as the “best athlete on the team” and a “phenomenal defensive athlete.”

“I feel like I can bring a lot of defense to the team,” Jefferson said. “A lot of energy; I think I can get in the paint pretty well and kick out to shooters, so just a lot of excitement and energy for the fans.”

Jefferson arrived on the UH campus two weeks ago, and has been working out with his teammates since.

  1. Thanks for the update on Jefferson; sounds like a solid, motivated student with athletic skill set. He’ll provide valuable minutes off the bench, and be instrumental in defensive pressure. How’s he look in workouts?

  2. welcome aboard big guy. there’s always room for a defensive stopper.

  3. looking forward to the next season.

but, are best days are stil ahead of us, can you imagine what kind of team we will field in 2012-2013?

wow. we’ll miss zane and his three’s, but, in two years we will be a force to reckon with. we’ll probably win the big west and go to the tournament.

  4. sounds like a well spoken positive kid. dayton i hope u can get more of the open gym scrimmages. would really like to see stokes, jefferson, blakes, and biggs on the court at the same time in the future

  5. Holla G-money will be bringing it this season!!!

  6. Welcome aboard!

In the video you can see Jefferson has some athleticism. Wish there other highlights (shooting, dribbling, defense, etc.), but I guess we’ll see over the next few months. Can’t wait for the 2011 Ohana hoopfest.

  7. checking his stats…don’t look for him to be a shooter…took 16 3’s and made 2…around a 65% free throw shooter…his D must be really good and with athleticism comes great play
