Chinese fans embrace the Warriors

The Hawaii basketball team was involved in an exciting – although frustrating – 81-80 loss to the Qingdao Eagles on Friday, August 12.

But most of the postgame buzz was about the postgame festivities on the court.

Hundreds of Chinese fans ran on the court after the game and surrounded the Warriors for pictures, autographs, handshakes and hugs.

“Crazy,” Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold said. “The guys were saying they’ve never had an experience like that before. It just shows the globalization of basketball.”

Junior forward Hauns Brereton added: “That was crazy. I loved it. I think everybody from the stands came out and mobbed us, wanted pictures. They like us out here, and it’s fun.”

It was nearly impossible for the Hawaii players and coaches to line up for a team photo, because the Chinese fans kept crowding in front of the team to get in the picture as well.

The Warriors stayed on the court for about 10 minutes before the crowd finally dispersed, allowing the players to get to their locker room.
