Mitchell ineligible for next season

DeShawn Mitchell — a high-scoring, high-jumping wing player — will not score a single point for the Hawaii basketball team.

Mitchell will not meet the necessary academic requirements to make him eligible for the 2011-12 season, and thus will not be joining the program.

Hawaii head coach Gib Arnold said: “When recruiting DeShawn Mitchell, we informed him of certain academic requirements that were necessary for him to enroll at the University of Hawaii and join our basketball team. Unfortunately, despite his best efforts, DeShawn was unable to reach those requirements. As a result, he will not be joining our team at this time. We wish DeShawn all the best in his search for a school where he can continue his basketball career.”

Mitchell, a 6-foot-5 guard/forward, played last season at Snow College in Utah. He ranked fourth among all junior college players in scoring with 23.8 points per game. He played his freshman season at UNLV.

Mitchell needed to attend summer school classes to achieve the associate’s degree necessary to make him eligible at UH, but he apparently will not be able to earn enough credits to complete that goal before the start of next season.

The loss of Mitchell does open a scholarship, although it is unsure if Arnold will seek another recruit or keep it open.

  1. Tough break. Sounded like he could have contributed right away.

  2. This is terrible news, I was looking forward to seeing this kid play at the SSC.

  3. Major bummer…..I hope he gets the academic side of his life in order.

  4. Too Bad about DeShawn –
simple math means(MAYBE) either he failed two or more classes or they’re just not offered in this time frame to earn the Associates Degree?

There Are TWO More Sessions even just at U.H. –

I would have hoped the worst case is he’d miss the China-Japan Trip (like some of us might) and get eligible in time for Fall OR December/JANUARY … 1-1/2 seasons would be the next best thing for DeShawn and maybe the team …

I’m thinking Gib’s gotta have one or two other talented recruits in his hip pocket OR that just became eligible (late) – Besides The Great U.H. Program THAT Trip should entice any half-smart and very talented recruit …

  5. Like everyone else I’m disappointed. Just like ‘Eagle’ I’m scratching my head as to why he’s ineligible for the entire season. This wasn’t totally unexpected though as there were “red-flags’ aplenty. I still had looked forward to seeing his athleticism on the court, though. His loss will prove to be another player’s opportunity.
