Break in schedule provides chance to recruit

When you are as isolated as the Hawaii basketball team, you have to take advantage of any travel opportunity.

Head coach Gib Arnold did just that, staying on the Mainland for four extra days this week to scout recruits.

The Warriors played road games at Boise State and Idaho last week, and the players returned to Honolulu on Sunday. Because Hawaii did not have a game scheduled this week, Arnold remained on the road until Thursday.

“I was able to see about 10 different kids in a couple of days, so I was able to maximize those days,” Arnold said. “Between practices and games and workouts, things like that, I saw three to four a day, so it worked out pretty well.”

Arnold watched recruits in Idaho and Southern California, although he could not specify which schools or players due to NCAA rules.

The Warriors are scheduled to host Nevada in a Western Athletic Conference game on Monday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

  1. Dayton,
If you get a chance, can you ask Coach if he has taken a look at Hunter Gibson, Matt Gibson’s younger brother. He is now starting, as a freshman, at Three Rivers Community College. It is the same school that Matt attended before coming to Hawaii.

  2. yo brother al k…how you?
i see you enjoy the recruiting phase of college sports like i do.

  3. gibber is the man. i can’t ever recall any head coach of ours recruit so hard and so relentlessly. it is gonna be fun to see who signs in the next month. with but three scholies to give i am sure that they will be quality guys and not quantity.

(the the hc who recruited almost as hard was bruce o’neill. too bad he got rubbed off, because i thought he was an excellent coach.)

  4. i enjoy the recruiting process just as much….it’s true that we should get quality over quantity…don’t jus fill the roster with anybody….we’ll see how gib will do recruiting from powerhouse to a mid-major program…..give em at least two more years after this one

  5. al k,

Coaches can not comment on specific players so don’t know about Hunter Gibson (and I haven’t seen his name affiliated with Hawaii on any recruiting sites).

Also, Gib Arnold has made recruiting stops in several states, but Missouri was not one of them so doubtful that Hunter is on Hawaii’s list. However, Gib was in Oklahoma to watch recruits last summer, so who knows?

  6. We don’t want another little matt, that guy was a head case. don’t you remember how many times he was kicked off the team and then let back on? it happened at least 3 times.

We need coach arnold to find us another vander joaquim or two. If he did that, we’d be a wac title contender next year for sure. GIVE ‘EM GIB!!!!
